Natural oils like coconut, jojoba, argan and tea tree are beauty classics — and for good reason. Packed with vitamins, fatty acids and antioxidants, these oils offer multiple benefits for skin and hair without expensive formulations. Better yet, many are common kitchen staples or easily found in drugstores. Below are some of the top affordable oils and how they can boost your beauty routine.

Coconut Oil: A perennial favorite, coconut oil contains lauric acid and vitamin E, giving hair rich nourishment and shine. It can penetrate the hair shaft, reducing protein loss and damage . For hair, use it as a deep-conditioning mask: warm a tablespoon, apply to lengths and ends, leave 15–30 minutes (or overnight with a shower cap), then shampoo well. For skin, coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer for very dry areas. In fact, studies show coconut oil hydrates dry skin as effectively as petroleum jelly. (Use sparingly on the face if you’re acne-prone, since it’s heavier.)

Its mild antibacterial properties can also help soothe and protect skin.

Jojoba Oil: Jojoba is actually a wax ester similar to human sebum. It’s light and non-greasy, making it superb for both skin and scalp. It’s rich in vitamin E and B-complex, which hydrate skin and fight free radicals. Because it mimics natural oils, jojoba can trick the skin into producing less oil and penetrate deep into pores. A Cleveland Clinic expert notes it “can penetrate pores and deliver anti-inflammatory molecules,” so it helps soothe acne-prone skin. For hair, jojoba is a great leave- in conditioner: massage into the scalp to moisturize and improve scalp health, and work through ends to add shine. It helps seal in moisture and makes hair strands stronger and less brittle.

Argan Oil: Known as “liquid gold,” argan oil is packed with nourishing linoleic and oleic fatty acids plus antioxidant vitamin E. It hydrates and softens both hair and skin. For hair, a few drops of argan oil on damp or dry hair will tame frizz and make it silky. It also helps repair damaged strands and protects against heat styling. For skin, argan oil absorbs well and improves texture. Studies note that argan oil helps protect the skin’s natural barrier and reduces signs of aging. Apply it as a nighttime facial oil or add a few drops to your moisturizer.

Tea Tree Oil: This essential oil has powerful antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Medical studies have shown 5% tea tree oil gel can significantly improve mild to moderate acne. It kills acne bacteria and soothes redness. Tea tree is often one of the cheapest essential oils on drugstore shelves. Use it very diluted (1–5% in a carrier oil like jojoba or mixed into your face wash) and apply only on pimples or problem areas, not all over (it can dry or irritate skin). Dermatology guidelines do say evidence is limited, but many find low-concentration tea tree helpful. It’s also used in scalp shampoos to help with dandruff or lice.
