(And How to Fix Them)
Even with the best intentions, little habits can sabotage your skin care. Here are some common mistakes—
even smart people make—and expert tips on how to correct them
Over-Cleansing or Harsh Cleansers: Washing your face too often or using abrasive scrubs/ cleansers can strip skin’s natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and even more oil production later. Dermatologists advise washing the face only once in the morning and once at night with a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser. Avoid foaming agents and harsh soaps on your face. Instead,• massage cleanser in with fingers (not a brush) and rinse with lukewarm water. If skin feels tight after washing, switch to a milder formula or wash less frequently.
Skipping Sunscreen: This is one of the biggest no-nos. Failing to apply daily SPF accelerates premature aging (wrinkles, sagging) and worsens pigmentation. Sunscreen also helps fade acne scars and dark spots by blocking harmful UV rays. Make sunscreen your last step every morning (and reapply if you’ll be outdoors). Even if you’re wearing makeup, use an SPF 30+ formula or a powder
SPF to be sure. Dermatology groups stress that daily sunscreen is essential for healthy skin.
Inconsistent Routine: Changing products constantly or expecting overnight results is a mistake.
Skin care actives (like retinol, acids or brighteners) can take 6–12 weeks to show real improvement.
According to AAD recommendations, stick with a consistent routine and give products time to work . If you switch cleansers or serums every few days, your skin will never adapt. Choose a few core products that suit your skin type and use them regularly. Mark progress only after several weeks, not days.
Sleeping in Makeup: Even if you’re tired, leaving makeup on at night clogs pores and prevents skin from repairing itself. Always remove all makeup and cleanse your face before bed. Makeup residue can cause breakouts and dull skin. If double-cleansing feels like too much, at least use a micellar water wipe or oil cleanser to remove makeup fully before using your regular face wash.
Picking Pimples or Scrubbing Blemishes: When you pinch or scrub spots, you push bacteria deeper and inflame the skin. Mayo Clinic warns that popping pimples “can cause scars” and spread acne. Instead, treat pimples with spot treatments or hydrocolloid patches (e.g. COSRX) and leave them alone. Patience is key: let treatments do the work rather than risking scars by touching.
Not Moisturizing After Treatment: If you use acne products (benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retinoids), these can be drying. A common mistake is skipping moisturizer, which leads skin to produce excess oil or become irritated. Always follow harsh treatments with a gentle moisturizer (fragrance-free, oil-free). Even oily skin needs hydration to maintain a healthy barrier.
Ignoring the Neck and Chest: Your face care routine often stops at the jawline, but sun damage and aging affect the neck and chest too. Extend sunscreen, moisturizer, and treatments down onto the neck and upper chest. These areas can wrinkle or develop brown spots if neglected.
Using Wrong Products for Your Skin Type: As detailed in our skin type guide, oily, dry and sensitive skin need different approaches. Using a too-drying acne wash on dry skin, or a heavy cream on oily skin, can do more harm than good. Tailor products to your skin’s needs (e.g., non- comedogenic lotions for acne-prone; fragrance-free for sensitive) to avoid irritation.
Forgetting to Patch-Test: Jumping right into a new active (like a peel or retinoid) without testing a small patch can cause a rash. Always apply a new product to a discreet area (behind the ear or forearm) for a day or two first.
Neglecting Diet/Hydration: While not “cosmetic,” diet and hydration impact skin. Drinking plenty of water and eating fruits/veggies help skin heal and glow. Overloading on sugar or dairy may• aggravate acne in some people. Treat your skin from inside out: a balanced diet and enough sleep give better results than any cream alone.
By avoiding these pitfalls, you’ll improve the effectiveness of your routine. Remember: cleanse gently, protect with sunscreen, moisturize properly, and be consistent.
